Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) are both lethal diseases that affect the human immune system to fail miserably by attacking and weakening the immune system. This makes the ill person’s body vulnerable to any attack, although HIV and AIDS almost has the same effect on the ill person’s body, there are some differences between them, the main difference between HIV and AIDS is that HIV is the virus that triggers AIDS.
Human Immunodeficiency Virus or HIV causes AIDS that targets the immune system, destroys its capabilities to repel viruses which causes sickness or even cancer. The spread of this disease was first discovered on the year 1981, and it is still around today. The transfer of bodily fluids such as semen, blood, pre-ejaculate, vaginal fluid, even breast milk are the main sources of infection of HIV, other ways of transmission of this disease is unprotected sex. Infection starts when an infected fluid meets an uninfected fluid, introducing the diseased cells to the healthy ones, and finally destroying the healthy cells, infecting the uninfected cells within the uninfected fluid of a person. Within two to four weeks of infection, the infected person suffers from the symptoms caused by having HIV infected cells; rashes, fever, weight loss, nausea, vomiting, headache, and mouth sores are the most common symptoms that has been monitored from HIV infected persons.
There are four stages of HIV infection that has been recorded and has been observed until today, the four stages are the “Window”, “Seroconversion”, “Symptom Free”, and finally “AIDS”. During the Window stage, the HIV virus is continuously and rapidly spreading throughout the infected person’s immune system, this stage also when the anti-bodies are slowly destroyed by the HIV strain. The second stage is Seroconversion, on this stage, the body of the infected releases massive amounts of antibodies in order to defend the body from the struggle caused by the HIV infection. This may also be seen at as the final struggle of the body to fend off the infection.
The third stage is the Symptom Free period, during this stage, the person suffering from the infection feels no pain or any kind of infection, feeling no pain or any symptoms may also mean that the body has finally lost the struggle and is malfunctioning due to its lost antibodies. This period can last from six months to ten years, so it is easily misunderstood as being treated. Until now, medical science is still not sure why this stage reaches the span of ten years.
And finally, the stage of AIDS, on this stage, the body is truly in its worst condition, with no antibodies to fight the now malignant, there is no chance on being treated, it is only the matter of time when the infected person dies because of the HIV infection. There are almost 25 million deaths because of HIV/AIDS and the number of deaths is still growing, so knowing the difference between HIV and AIDS will help society to know how to determine the survivability rate of an infected person, thus knowing how to prevent and even cure this disease while still on the early stages.
